By yesterday afternoon, (Friday, July 24, 2026), a brief respite in the weather brought out patchy sunshine, allowing water levels to recede slightly from their peak morning limits.
Despite the minor drop, a massive volume of water continues to roar beneath the historic Ahilyabai Holkar Bridge at tremendous speed, keeping the entire riverside network on high alert.

The severe flooding was rapidly accelerated by extreme weather across the district’s upper catchment basins. The Trimbakeshwar taluka recorded a staggering 193 mm of rainfall in a single window, forcing an unprecedented volume of runoff directly into the primary reservoirs.
Consequently, the Gangapur Dam filled to a critical 98.26% of its maximum capacity. To prevent structural overflow, irrigation officials initiated a heavy, phased water discharge of 14,407 cusecs directly into the Godavari Riverbed. This massive upstream release then combined with localised urban drainage to push the river well past its official danger markers.

The sudden influx of floodwaters has dealt a severe economic blow to local merchants. Small businesses, tea stalls, and religious vendors operating along the concrete steps of the Panchavati ghats suffered extensive property damage and immediate business suspension as the muddy river forced its way into their shops.
The primary spiritual markers of the area are completely underwater. The iconic Dutondya Maruti statue, which locals traditionally use as a natural flood gauge, remains fully submerged alongside several low-lying riverbank temples.

The dramatic visual spectacle drew thousands of curious onlookers to the scene. Throughout yesterday afternoon, families in cars and two-wheelers routinely jammed traffic on the Holkar Bridge to catch a glimpse of the roaring river.
Large crowds gathered along the pedestrian walkways to record video clips and snap photos. Alarmingly, despite the extreme force of the water below, some visitors bypassed basic safety precautions, descending the steep concrete stairs at the edge of the bridge to get as close to the raging shoreline as possible.
